Launching India’s First Internet Radio for the Blind in Town | Nagpur News

The radio would have 6 hours of content each day which would be repeated

Nagpur: Radio Aksh, the country’s first radio channel exclusively for the visually impaired, was launched here on Tuesday. This internet radio channel will engage and present content that suits them, and also created by them.
The 96-year-old institution of Nagpur, The Blind Relief Association Nagpur (TBRAN) and Samdrushti Kshamata Vikas Avam Anusandhan Mandal (Saksham) are the organizations behind the idea. The channel will be available for free on various internet radio platforms.
To operate 24/7, Radio Aksh would initially have six hours of content which would be repeated four times during the day. The content will be increased to 24 hours per phase, said Makarand Pandharipande, president of TBRAN.
“We called on blind artists, writers and poets to come up with the content. We are ready to record and broadcast it as Radio Aksh will be their own platform,” Pandharipande added.
Currently, TBRAN and Saksham are running audiobook, e-library and braille book projects for blind students. Many housewives and retired professionals volunteer to create audiobooks and other audio content for blind listeners.
Saksham’s Shirish Darvhekar said educational materials and digital literature content will be released in the first phase. “This is the first radio station of its kind and we are sure that many more will appear in the coming days across the country. We are committed to keeping our content unique and crucial to audiences,” he said.
Officials from both organizations said the concept arrived during the Covid lockdown. “Leading online classes for blind students was a challenge, but we did it using recorded audiobooks,” Darvhekar said.
Initially, they thought of starting an FM radio channel, but due to the limitations like area and content, they decided to go for internet radio. News content related to government programs for the blind, employment opportunities, etc. will also be available soon.
Internet connectivity is the only requirement for this channel. A special mobile app is available for free.
These special internet radio channels operate in the UK, US and some other countries. In India, specialized radio channels for people with disabilities are only live on online platforms. But, Radio Aksh is the first channel exclusively for the blind.
